Leading the way to Net Zero through Passivhaus
Passivhaus is recognised as the world’s most rigorous energy efficiency standard, significantly reducing carbon emissions and cutting heating consumption by up to 60–80%. As part of our commitment to reaching net zero, urbanest has made the strategic decision to target Passivhaus certification for all new developments, ensuring long-term energy efficiency and reduced environmental impact.
This journey began with urbanest Battersea, which achieved Passivhaus certification in 2024, setting a new benchmark for student accommodation. It continues with urbanest Canary Wharf, currently in development, which will be one of the largest Passivhaus student accommodations in Europe.
This is a significant undertaking, but as a responsible provider of sector-leading student accommodation in central London, we recognise the importance of pushing boundaries in sustainable development.
A Total Commitment to Net Zero and Responsible Business
Since opening our first building in 2009, urbanest has remained dedicated to acting responsibly as a developer, landlord, employer, and member of the communities we belong to.
We continually explore new ways to reduce our environmental impact and move closer to net zero, while ensuring that our residences and workplaces are inclusive, safe, and rewarding places to live and work. Our commitment to sustainability is reflected in our actions, from adopting biomass energy in our first property in Hoxton to developing some of the most energy-efficient student accommodations ever built.
Beyond the buildings themselves, we actively support the communities around us. We share our facilities with local organisations, offer resident bursaries, and provide office space for start-ups, ensuring our developments contribute positively to their surroundings.
By targeting Passivhaus, urbanest is not just reducing its carbon footprint; we are taking a significant step towards net zero, setting a new standard for sustainability in student accommodation. This commitment reinforces our dedication to building responsibly, supporting our residents, and shaping a more sustainable future.
Sustainability is a continuous journey, and our work to meet and exceed Passivhaus standards is part of a broader strategy to achieve net zero and integrate cutting-edge sustainable practices across all aspects of our operations. We hope to inspire other developers to do the same, driving positive change across the sector and contributing to the fight against climate change.
Through our commitment to Passivhaus and net zero, we are not only improving the energy efficiency of our buildings but also enhancing the quality of life for our residents—creating spaces where they can thrive, now and in the future.
