Since opening its doors in 2012 , urbanest Tower Bridge has become one of our most popular communities. Its location in the heart of the Square Mile, overlooking the Tower of London and the river provides residents with a perfect base from which to get to university and discover the best of London.
Developing on such a historic site came with a unique set of challenges. For example, the building height had to be limited due to it being in the viewing plain of the Tower of London, a UNESCO world heritage site. What’s more, the skeleton of a roman soldier was found when excavating the basement, due to the site being along the ditch of the original roman wall. Despite all of this, we still managed to finish the build four months early in order to house Executives during the London Olympics!
The final result was an 11 storey, mixed-use scheme with 10 floors and a basement housing 177 student beds and 220 square metres of retail space in addition to the reception, common areas and ancillary spaces for the student accommodation.
As always, sustainability was at the heart of the scheme. BREEAM Excellent was achieved, and the building contains a host of environmental features including an impressive living wall overlooking a pocket park.
